Local Stockwell Info
Stockwell SW9 is an area in south-west London and a part of the London Borough of Lambeth. It used to be a very poor district in the past but now Stockwell is developed due to the fact that it is near Central London and has good transport connections.
The name of the area comes from the word “stoc” which means a tree trunk in Old English and also from a local well.
The once famous botanical garden of John Tradescant is today commemorated in Tradescant Road and in front of St. Stephen’s Church.
Stockwell is also home to many social houses some of which are Lansdowne Green, Studley, Stockwell Park, Stockwell Gardens, Mursell, etc.
Stockwell Bus Garage is the single 20th century building of the area that is quite remarkable as far as architecture is concerned. Interesting remains of 19th century buildings in Stockwell can be seen mainly is Stockwell Park Conservation Area. 
There are a lot of Afro-Caribbean churches in the area such as C.A.C. Stockwell together with a number of Anglican and Catholic places of worship.
Stockwell War Memorial and Shelter is another local place of interest. Stockwell is also known for being home to a large number of Portuguese residents and it is therefore called “Little Portugal”.
