Local Battersea Info

Battersea is an area situated on the south side of the River Thames, in south London. It belongs to the London Borough of Wandsworth.

In the past Battersrea used to be part of Surrey, it takes its name from the old village of Battersea. The site of the original settlement of the area is marked by St. Mary’s Church, where William Blake was married.

Before the industrial Revolution, Battersea was an agricultural area, providing food for the City of London. Later the district became known for industrial firms thrived in it. A number of large firms grew along the river Thames. Not until the 1970s did industry decline and move away from Battersea.

In 1838 was built the first railway line through Battersea from east to west. Five more lines were built in the next 22 years. All trains from Waterloo Station and Victoria Station ran through these lines. By the early twentieth century, within this relatively small area were situated two locomotive works at Nine Elms and Longhedge and three important motive power depots. Battersea had became a major town railway centre. As a result all the farmland was built over, except for some green spots, such as Battersea Park, Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common and the population of the area grew from 6,000 people to 168,000.

In the area there are plenty of parks and green areas to relax and have some nice time, like Battersea Park, which is a home of a zoo as well. Shaftesbury Park Estate is a conservation area, where a lot of Victorian houses (over a thousand) can be seen, preserved in their original style.

Northcote Road is a famous local shopping street, lively and bustling, but if you decide to have fun in a more sophisticated way, Battersea has a lot to offer, for sure. Here is situated the Royal Academy of Dance and Battersea Arts Centre, in the former Town Hall.

The area was or still is, a home of many people of art, comedians, actors, writers, music producers and musicians.
