Local Tooting Info

Tooting SW17 is an area situated in south-west London and a part of the London Borough of Wandsworth. It is identified as one of the thirty-five major centres of Greater London in the London Plan.

The origin of the district’s name is not quite clear. It may derive from Anglo-Saxon and mean “the people of Tota” or from the verb “to tout” which means “to look out”.

The area developed in the Victorian period but the significant expansion occurred later in the 1920s and 1930s. A few steps marking the development of the area are the opening of Tooting Bec Lido, the relocation of St. George’s Hospital in Tooting and the renovation of the same hospital.

Tooting is popular for the comedy series Citizen Smith which was shot in the area. Furthermore, a part of a crater on Mars has taken its name from Tooting. The Meaning of Liff is a book which includes the famous Tooting Bec.

Upper Tooting Road is one of the most interesting places of the district offering a range of Asian restaurants which attract many visitors. Some of them are the Indian, Sri Lankan, Chinese and Afghan pubs, restaurants and pizzerias.

There are also some parks and green open spaces, which make Tooting one of the most desirable areas in London. Tooting Commons is the largest open space in the area.
